Hamborgarabullan, or just "Bullan" is a burger joint by the harbour in downtown Reykjavík. It was founded in spring 2004 and became popular pretty quickly. The place has an authentic retro feel to it.
Entering The Burger Joint is sort of like stepping into a time machine as the walls are covered with old film/band posters and pictures drawn by kids during their mealtime, and the ceiling is decorated with light sets. They play old fahsioned music, and have an old fashioned counter service. The place is owned by Tomas Tomasson, the true hamburger king of Iceland. In fact, the joint is so popular it has now opened franchises in Selfoss, Hafnarfjörður, Bíldshöfði, Ofanleiti and another one at b5, Bankastræti in downtown Reykjavik.
The menu features three sizes of hamburgers but you can make things simple by ordering "The offer of the century", a mid-sized bulla-burger, french fries and a coke. The bulla-burger has been awarded the prize for best burger in Grapevine magazine for three years in a row now, to nobody's surprise. They only use the best ingredients possible, roughly grounded top quality beef, cooked on an american gas barbeque. The burgers are all garnished with iceberg lettuce, tomato slices and chopped onions along with ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. Seems like there is nothing that stops The Burger Joint. Don't miss it while you're in Iceland.
What Grapevine had to say about Bullan:
"Hamborgarbúllan is an interesting place; it´s shape can best be described as...weird. Inside, the walls are covered with hipster Americana; a promotional poster for the first Blues Brothers movie, a portrait of Johnny Cash looking all speed-sick and beautifully ugly and a picture of the cast of the Sopranos blocked to put you in mind of DaVinci´s Last Supper, though without the mighty J.C. But out the windows, you can watch as the boat Hrefna Rós gets a new coat of paint before launching back into the bay. The burgers are excellent. I had a simple single patty with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and ketchup with melted ´yellow cheese´. I was so happy to discover my beloved American cheese on the burger, I was nearly moved to tears. I highly recommend this place. Great burgers in an interesting spot, cooked right in front of you." - Padraig Mara, Grapevine
